Smart humour hits the mark in this Catalan-language version of Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright Donald Margulies’ topical play, in which a journalist couple struggle with their domestic dramas after trauma forces them to return to Brooklyn from the war in Iraq.

La Treva (Time Stands Still) compromises on Margulies’ title, (la treva, ‘the ceasefire’ in English, was chosen as it retained the impact of the original), but it carries its own resonance to the play, placing emphasis on transition and concession – while not resolution.

A long stage gives scope to show the shifting dynamic between the pair; home for Sarah (Clara Segura) feels inhibiting and frustrating, while for James (David Selvas) it’s liberating and an opportunity for intimacy. Enter their friend and editor Richard (Ramon Madaula) and his chatty young girlfriend Mandy (Mima Riera): a strange intrusion that serves to crack a fragile façade…
