Deadly serious about circus

This anguished encounter between the
classical string quartet Quatuor Debussy and the 11-strong Australian acrobatic
troupe Circa spins out its yarn into an hour and 20 minutes of repetitive
climbing, contortion and collapsing on stage, set to a heart-wrenching score by
the 20th century Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich.
What was meant by this uncomfortable
juxtaposition is a mystery to me – although that it had ‘significance’ seemed explicitly
demanded. The music, played live on stage with archetypal sobriety during the
whole piece, was strangely fronted by the humourless acrobatics that seemed intimidated
by it, offering a form of distraction in response.
While undoubtedly accomplished performers,
stripped of the colour and joie de vivre of circus, in grey inmate-style
outfits and then (oddly) underwear, the aesthetic of circus slowed down to the
pace of contemporary dance, yet without a very coherent choreography, transmitted
a kind of strung out precariousness but rarely emotion.
